Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving announced on Friday that he is free from physical restrictions following his recovery from a torn ACL that kept him sidelined for 19 months. Addressing the media for the first time since his injury on March 3, 2025, Irving expressed optimism about his return to the court, saying, “I’m ready to go out there and kick some butt.”

Irving, 34, emphasized his confidence and eagerness to prove himself, despite acknowledging that questions about his performance are inevitable in the competitive landscape of the NBA. He remarked, “It’s just like riding a bike,” as he looked forward to rejoining his teammates.

New team president Masai Ujiri affirmed Irving's readiness, stating, “In terms of health, he’s right there. You hope he plays games and he gets right back into it.”

Reflecting on his time away from the game, Irving mentioned the personal growth he experienced and his commitment to evolving as a leader both on and off the court. He noted, “How can people look to me to be a better leader, a better communicator, be more emotional, vulnerable.”

Irving’s comeback aligns with a new chapter for the Mavericks, who finished last season with a disappointing 26-56 record. Ujiri and new head coach Dusty May aim to revitalize the franchise, with May transitioning from college basketball after leading Michigan to the NCAA title last season. May remarked on coaching Irving, saying, “Kyrie has seen and done as much as just about anyone in the association. I would expect that I’m only going to coach him when I’m able to add value.”

For the upcoming season, Irving will also play alongside Cooper Flagg, last year’s unanimous Kia Rookie of the Year. Irving expressed enthusiasm for their partnership, stating, “High-level basketball players, no matter the age – you put us out there, we’re going to win some ballgames.” Flagg echoed this sentiment, excited about their on-court connection developed during the summer.

The Mavericks recently re-signed Dwight Powell, a veteran player who has been with the team since December 2014. Dallas is set to begin its preseason with two games against the Houston Rockets in Macao, China, starting October 9, and will open the regular season at Houston on October 21, followed by a home opener against the San Antonio Spurs on October 24.
