J.R. Smith Arrested in North Texas on Family Violence Charges

Former NBA player J.R. Smith was arrested in North Texas for allegedly assaulting a family member. The Royse City Police Department reported that Smith, whose full name is Earl Joseph "J.R." Smith III, was taken into custody on Monday afternoon during a traffic stop.

An officer’s in-car license plate reader alerted the police to Smith's vehicle on eastbound Interstate 30 around 2:45 p.m. He had an outstanding warrant from the Southlake Police Department for family violence assault causing bodily injury. Following his arrest, Smith was transported to the Hunt County Detention Center.

Details regarding the family violence incident that led to the warrant have not been disclosed by Southlake police. Smith had a 16-season career in the NBA from 2004 to 2020, playing for teams including the New Orleans Hornets, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers. He won two NBA Championships, one with the Cavaliers in 2016 and the other with the Lakers in 2020.
