Mikel Arteta Reflects on Arsenal's Heavy Loss to Brighton

Arteta said, "extremely disappointed" with how far his team fell short of expectations, highlighting defensive uncertainty, a lack of midfield control, and insufficient attacking creativity. He acknowledged Brighton's superior performance, explaining, "the first one because Brighton they were really good." He added that in critical 50-50 ball situations, Brighton often emerged victorious.

The Gunners, who had 15 players participate in the World Cup, joined pre-season later than some teammates. Arteta countered this setback by praising their recent form since returning and reminded reporters that it is still early in the season. "What we've done and the way we've competed has been remarkable, but this is a big lesson to understand what it takes to win at this level," he said.

Brighton currently leads the Premier League in scoring, netting 16 goals, with eight of those occurring in the last week alone. Arsenal, known for their defensive strength and having conceded the fewest goals last season, failed to maintain their reputation, with former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer asserting that Brighton could have scored even more goals.

At halftime, Arsenal was down 2-0, a tough position they have not recovered from in a league game since March 2008. Shearer noted Brighton's effective team play and organization, crediting manager Fabian Hurzeler for the team's performance.

Despite Arsenal’s £200 million summer investment aimed at bolstering the squad, Arteta reminded his players of the Premier League's challenges, stating, "If you don't get out of that first part as winners, it will be extremely difficult to dominate the game."

Former Premier League defender Curtis Davies described the performance as a "blip," pointing out the lack of cohesion in the defense and the absence of attacking threat from Arsenal. He emphasized that they must reassess their game after such a disappointing display.
