Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone Meet Again in Madrid Derby

The two managers previously met in a Madrid derby in 2012 during Mourinho's first spell at Real Madrid, where he led his team to a 4-1 victory at the former Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Mourinho emphasized the significance of a derby, stating, "Derbies are always something more special because of the history, the culture of the games, and the passion of the fans," while also noting that securing three points is the primary objective.

In their six prior meetings, Mourinho has achieved three wins and one draw. Atletico's Copa del Rey victory in 2013 ended a 14-year drought against their rivals.

Currently, Real Madrid is positioned second in La Liga with 15 points from six matches, trailing Barcelona, who leads with 21 points. Atletico Madrid ranks fourth with 13 points. A loss for Real could leave them six points off the pace after seven matches.

Atletico is on a positive run after bouncing back from consecutive losses against Athletic Club and Liverpool, posting wins against Real Sociedad (3-0) and Osasuna (4-0). Real Madrid also heads into the derby with a recent victory, defeating Elche 3-2.

Mourinho has been cautious about comparing his squad with Atletico and Barcelona. While Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, has started the season with eight consecutive wins in all competitions, Mourinho points out the challenges Real has faced, particularly in matches like the one against Elche, where they had to recover from a 2-2 draw to secure a last-minute victory.

He acknowledged, "The league is a marathon and it's not always a straight line. There will be obstacles, but we will be there to overcome them," though he expressed a desire for his team to improve their control of games.

Historically, Real Madrid struggles at Metropolitano, winning only two of their last 11 away matches, the last win coming four years ago in La Liga. Atletico triumphed in their last derby 5-2, a significant loss for Real's previous coach, Xabi Alonso.

Mourinho’s focus on tactical adaptability has been a hallmark of his return, as he stated, "I've evolved alongside my players." Simeone shared his thoughts on Real's strengths, highlighting their effectiveness in transition, especially pointing out players like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

To combat this, Simeone emphasized that Atletico must minimize turnovers to disrupt Real's attacking flow. He described his team as still "in construction" after significant roster changes over the summer.

Injury concerns include Julian Alvarez, who is expected to play despite recent fitness issues, while Alexander Sorloth remains sidelined. New signing Jonathan David has been impactful, scoring in consecutive matches.

Simeone acknowledged the pressure new players might feel but stressed the importance of maintaining composure. Despite their competitive rivalry, both coaches hold mutual respect.
