Andreeva had a commanding lead at 4-1 and served for the match at 5-3 in the second set. However, Alexandrova fought back, pushing the match to a tiebreak. There, Andreeva hit a decisive forehand winner for a 3-2 lead and ultimately clinched the match by winning five of the last six points.
In her post-match remarks, Andreeva noted, "Even when I had an advantage in the second set leading 5-2, I felt like she was still pressuring me. I could have played more aggressively, but what a match this was. I'm super happy with how it went. She played unbelievable today, and I'm very happy to get my very first win against her."
This victory marks Andreeva's first win against Alexandrova after two previous defeats where she did not win a set. At 16, she also became the youngest player to reach the China Open semifinals since Agnes Szavay in 2007. This match represents Andreeva's fourth career WTA 1000 semifinal; only Coco Gauff, with five, has more WTA 1000 semifinal appearances as a teenager since the format's inception in 2009.
Statistically, Andreeva performed strongly, landing 62% of her first serves and winning 71% of those points. She maintained a favorable winners-to-unforced-errors differential of 23-16, including a 15-5 advantage in the second set. Both players broke serve four times, with Andreeva converting four of seven break-point opportunities.
Moving forward, Andreeva will face Nikola Bartunkova, who reached her first WTA 1000 semifinal by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0. The two players previously met at the US Open last month, where Andreeva won 6-2, 7-6 (5). Reflecting on the upcoming match, Andreeva expressed excitement about facing Bartunkova again, noting her impressive performance to reach the semifinals and acknowledging the dynamic nature of their previous match.
With a combined age of just over 40 years, Andreeva and Bartunkova represent the fourth-youngest semifinal matchup in WTA 1000 history since 2009. The winner will advance to the final against either No. 6 seed Elina Svitolina, No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 13 seed Elise Mertens, or local favorite Zheng Qinwen.
