Team History

The Akari Sparks' participation marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which was established in 2025. Initially, the team competed under the name Discovery-Rizal Perlas in the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL), becoming part of the league's inaugural season. In 2026, they rebranded to Akari Sparks, reflecting the lighting company's steadfast support for local sports, a commitment that began with sponsorships of various collegiate programs.

In 2022, Akari entered the professional ranks by forming the Akari Chargers in the Premier Volleyball League and followed up with the NXLed Chameleons in 2023. Their shift into women's professional basketball came with their participation in the WMPBL, showcasing their evolution from a school-based team in the PBA's developmental league to a competitive franchise.

Path to WBL Asia 2026

The rebranding proved fortunate as the Akari Sparks completed a successful WMPBL season, finally clinching the championship after defeating Batangas-New Zealand Blufire in a thrilling best-of-three final. Akari's impressive run featured a near-perfect regular season, finishing 9-1, which secured them a direct entry into the Semi-Finals. They advanced to the finals by sweeping RK Hoops–Quezon City and achieved victory over the Blufire, winning the deciding game 73-59 to capture their first WMPBL title and earn a spot in the WBL Asia 2026.

Notable players include Stef Berberabe, who made history by recording a quadruple-double in the 2025 season, alongside Jhazmin Joson, Kent Pastrana, and Camille Clarin, all of whom have experience in major FIBA women’s competitions.

Additionally, the team will benefit from the experiences of Saicha Grant-Allen and Bre'Amber Scott, both expected to strengthen the squad as it embarks on this new journey.
