Eugenie "Genie" Bouchard, hailing from Montreal, Canada, began playing tennis at an early age, where she showcased her skills by climbing the junior rankings. She achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 5 in October 2014. Bouchard's tennis accolades include reaching the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and the French Open in 2013, as well as finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon that same year after facing Petra Kvitová. These accomplishments made her the first Canadian-born player to reach the final of a major singles tournament.
