**Foundational Years (1976-1986)**

The Women of Troy commenced competition in the 1976-77 season, under the leadership of head coach Marci Cantrell, being the first Division I women's basketball program to offer athletic scholarships. A year later, Linda Sharp took over as head coach, ushering in a period of remarkable success. Over 12 seasons, Sharp led USC to a 271-99 record, two NCAA championships, and 10 postseason appearances.

USC first gained national attention in 1981 by reaching the AIAW Final Four and finished fourth. The subsequent season, under the new NCAA tournament format, the team reached an NCAA regional final. The arrival of Cheryl Miller in 1982 was transformative; following her freshman year, USC captured the 1983 NCAA championship and became the first team to claim back-to-back titles in 1984.

Miller's achievements include earning three consecutive Naismith Trophies and establishing records for points (3,018) and rebounds (1,534), which still stand today. Many players from USC's championship era went on to have influential careers in professional basketball, with both Miller and Cooper being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

**Success Continues (1987-1996)**

USC maintained its prominence in women's basketball beyond its championship years. Guard Rhonda Windham won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award in 1987, leading the team to a conference title and NCAA regional round. Marianne Stanley, who became head coach in 1989, guided USC to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1991 to 1993.

Another standout, Lisa Leslie, entered the program in 1990, gaining recognition as a three-time All-American and winning the 1994 Naismith Trophy. Leslie and her teammate Tina Thompson, who joined in 1994, were later inducted into the Hall of Fame.

**21st Century Developments (1997-2006)**

Fred Williams coached the team until 1999, followed by Chris Gobrecht, who led USC to several WNIT appearances. The construction of the Galen Center in 2006 provided the Women of Troy with a new home. Under Mark Trakh, the team returned to postseason contention, achieving a 20-win season in 2005.

**Recent Growth (2007-2016)**

Michael Cooper took over as head coach in 2009, leading the program to the 2011 WNIT championship game. Cynthia Cooper-Dyke became the head coach in 2013, resulting in USC winning its first conference tournament and earning an NCAA Tournament berth in 2014.

**Current Era (2017-2026)**

Trakh returned as head coach in 2017, and Lindsay Gottlieb took over in 2021, significantly advancing the program. In 2022-23, USC won 21 games, returning to the NCAA Tournament. During the following season, freshman JuJu Watkins helped the team achieve a 29-win season and a Pac-12 Tournament championship, leading them to the Elite Eight for the first time in three decades. USC is now entering its 51st season, eager to build on its storied history.
