Duke Football Gains Traction as Basketball Dominance Continues

Known primarily as a basketball powerhouse, Duke has a storied history in the sport, marked by 13 Final Four appearances and five National Championships under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. The basketball program's success has overshadowed the football team, which has struggled historically. Nevertheless, Duke football is transforming under Diaz's leadership.

In his tenure, Diaz has brought the team to the forefront of the ACC, achieving nine wins in each of the prior two seasons and a conference title in 2025. This year, the Blue Devils have defeated Illinois, Tulane, Stanford, and William & Mary by a combined score of 114-17.

Despite this performance, Duke is not receiving the recognition it deserves. They remain outside the AP Top 25, even as one of four ACC teams with perfect records. In the last eight games, Duke has consistently outperformed expectations, securing a conference championship and triumphing over ranked opponents, yet has not been ranked.

Diaz faces significant challenges, having lost key players like quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Cooper Barkate to the transfer portal just before the season. Additionally, Duke's NIL budget is notably smaller compared to other Power Conference teams, which can hinder recruiting.

Despite these obstacles, the Blue Devils boast a Heisman Trophy contender in running back Nate Sheppard. This season's squad is arguably Diaz's most talented, signaling a shift in perception around Duke football. Momentum is building for a program that is shedding its label as merely a basketball school, and fans hope that the football team's achievements will soon start to gain the respect they warrant.
