Zverev Secures Laver Cup Victory for Team Europe

Zverev, the reigning champion of both the Roland Garros and US Open, was looking to bounce back after losing to Alex de Minaur of Team World on Day 2. Team Europe, led by captain Yannick Noah, entered Sunday’s matches with a 7-5 lead and needed to win two matches to secure the title.

Team Europe gained momentum early when Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik defeated De Minaur and Taylor Fritz. With Carlos Alcaraz waiting as a backup, Zverev took advantage of the moment. "I haven’t won a Laver Cup match in two years, so I’m happy I did it today," Zverev stated. He acknowledged Team World’s challenges, saying they pushed Europe all the way and praised his own team's chemistry.

In the match against Tien, Zverev faced challenging moments but ultimately prevailed. Tien, making his Team World debut, pressured Zverev notably at 5-5 in the first set, saving a triple break-point opportunity to force a tiebreak, where Zverev showcased his experience.

The second set shifted in Zverev's favor after he broke Tien's serve for the first time. Zverev then fended off another triple break-point opportunity at 4-2 and concluded the match in one hour and 49 minutes.

Reflecting on the match, Zverev noted, "We had three chances to close it out in singles. Especially with Carlos playing after me, it gave me a little bit of confidence." Zverev's successful performance continues his remarkable record with Team Europe, where he has contributed to all six victories and holds the record for most singles wins at the event with eight.

Team World’s Tien, who reached his first major singles quarterfinal at the Australian Open this year, had previously won his first singles match on Day 2 against Cobolli. Zverev expressed the joy of winning as a team, stating, "Winning as a team — there’s no better feeling in sports." He emphasized the fun of competing alongside players he usually faces as opponents.
