Zverev and Shelton Compete in Davis Cup Qualifiers This Weekend

U.S. Open champion Alexander Zverev returns to action this weekend in the Davis Cup qualifiers, aiming to lead Germany to the finals. The German team faces Croatia in Halle on Saturday and Sunday, needing to secure a victory to advance to the eight-team finals in November. Zverev, currently ranked second in the world, defeated American Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open final, marking a high point in his season after winning his first Grand Slam at the French Open in June.

Zverev acknowledged that his coaching staff was hesitant about his quick return to competition. He expressed a strong desire to participate, stating, "I really, really would like to play in the Davis Cup. Everyone around me is trying to talk me out of it." Michael Kohlmann's team is favored to win against Croatia, which includes veteran Marin Cilic and newcomer Dino Prizmic. Croatia last reached the finals in 2023.

Meanwhile, the United States, aiming for their 33rd Davis Cup title after a 19-year drought, face a challenge against a robust Czech Republic squad in Prague. With Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul withdrawing from the team, Shelton, now ranked fourth globally, is under increased pressure to perform. Learner Tien and Martin Damm have been called up as replacements. The Czech team, led by captain Tomas Berdych, features French Open semifinalist Jakub Mensik and world number 24 Jiri Lehecka.

This matchup also serves as a rematch from last year, where the Czech Republic defeated the U.S. in Delray Beach. Bob Bryan, the U.S. team captain, looks to Shelton for a strong performance despite the player feeling fatigued during the U.S. Open final.

In other matches, South Korea will face India for the chance to have an Asian team reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2021. Spain's Rafael Jodar will debut against Chile, expressing excitement about representing his country. Britain will host Ecuador, while Austria plays against Belgium, with Alexander Blockx stepping back after his U.S. Open run. Canada is set to compete against France in Quebec City.
