Anisimova, who was set to defend her title at the China Open this week, withdrew late last week due to her ongoing left wrist issue. She had also pulled out of the Singapore Tennis Open the previous week for the same reason.
The year has been challenging for Anisimova, 25, who enjoyed success in 2025 with two WTA 1000 titles, two Grand Slam finals, and her debut in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings. She qualified for the year-end WTA Finals for the first time, making it to the semifinals after winning two group-stage matches.
In contrast, her 2026 season has seen her reach only one semifinal, at the Dubai tournament, across twelve events and without any finals. Her last appearance was at the US Open, where she won against Ashlyn Krueger and Lilli Tagger before losing to Anastasia Potapova in the third round. Anisimova finishes the year with a 22-12 record and slipped to No. 11 in the world after beginning the season at No. 3.
Additionally, World No. 3 Jessica Pegula has also withdrawn from the China Open due to an unspecified injury, similarly missing the Singapore event. World No. 10 Marta Kostyuk and World No. 15 Sorana Cirstea have also opted out of this penultimate WTA 1000 tournament.
