South Korean Players Achieve Historic Milestone at Korea Open

On Monday, 24-year-old Back Dayeon defeated Yuan Yue with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, marking her second round appearance in this event. On Tuesday, fellow wild cards Park Sohyun and Ku Yeonwoo completed a clean sweep for home players, achieving their first career victories at the tour level. Park, also 24, won against 's-Hertogenbosch champion Robin Montgomery 7-6(4), 6-3, while 23-year-old Ku triumphed over Alevtina Ibragimova 6-3, 6-2.

The last time three South Koreans reached the second round of a WTA event during the Open Era was in 1984 at Rio de Janeiro, when Han Eun-Sook advanced to the quarterfinals and Helen Park and Lee Jeong-Soon reached the second round, all as qualifiers.

The Korea Open has been part of the WTA calendar since 2004. In its history, two Koreans have previously made the second round in the same tournament in 2013 and again in 2023. In 2013, Jang Su-Jeong and Lee Ye-Ra reached the second round, with Jang being the most recent South Korean to advance to a WTA quarterfinal.

The trio of winners—Back, Park, and Ku—are all former Top 50 juniors with much experience competing in Seoul. Ku, the youngest, made a significant leap in her career last year, cutting her ranking from No. 523 to breaking into the Top 200 by November, thanks to a remarkable 63-22 season. She won a series of minor titles and achieved a career high ranking of No. 171 in July. Currently, she is ranked No. 185.

Back made her tour-level debut in 2022 as a wild card and gained attention last year by defeating top seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round. She has continued to progress, achieving a career high ranking of No. 245 this July and currently sitting at No. 272.

Park debuted as an unranked wild card at the same tournament in 2018, and she has a solid record overall, including a title at Goyang W35 this April. She reached a career high of No. 244 in February and is currently ranked No. 329.

Looking ahead, in the second round, Park will compete against No. 3 seed Lanlana Tararudee, Back will face No. 5 seed Maya Joint, and Ku will take on No. 4 seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Should any of them cause an upset, it could mark the first time multiple South Korean players have advanced to the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament in the Open Era. This century, only Jang and Cho Yoon-Jeong, a former No. 45 and three-time WTA finalist, have reached that stage.
