Alexander Zverev is assured of finishing the 2026 season as the world number one, following Carlos Alcaraz's unexpected defeat at the Shanghai Masters. Zverev's ascension comes as current number one Jannik Sinner is sidelined for the remainder of the year due to a knee injury. Alcaraz's loss to Belgium's Zizou Bergs, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), in the third round eliminated his chance of overtaking Zverev.

"It's been a fantastic season for me. Knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," Zverev stated. After finishing as a runner-up in three major finals, he clinched his first Grand Slam title by winning the French Open in June, followed by a victory at the US Open last month.
The 29-year-old German has capitalized on injury challenges faced by Alcaraz and Sinner, who were the dominant players on the ATP Tour in recent years. Zverev cannot officially surpass Sinner's ranking until at least November 2. He will be the first German man to end the year at number one and will be the oldest player to achieve this milestone for the first time.
Zverev returned to the top levels of tennis following a severe ankle injury sustained during the 2022 French Open semi-finals, which kept him sidelined for seven months. He has remained within the top four since March 2024. "So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in style," he added.
At the start of the year, it was widely expected that either Sinner or Alcaraz would hold the top ranking. In early 2026, Alcaraz led with 12,050 points, followed closely by Sinner at 11,500, demonstrating their dominance after winning all eight Grand Slam titles between them in 2024 and 2025. At that time, Zverev was third with only 5,110 points, significantly behind the leaders.
However, as the season progressed, Zverev achieved what many viewed as improbable. It is important to note that Zverev's Grand Slam victories occurred while Sinner and Alcaraz were absent due to injuries. He faced no top-10 players until defeating Ben Shelton in the US Open final. Zverev acknowledged that he might not have claimed the top ranking if both rivals had been fully fit and at their best. Still, he has succeeded by competing against the players available to him, marking the pinnacle of a career that had once appeared to fall short of expectations after he rose to prominence as a teenage star.
