In addition to the equal prize money announcement, the 2027 season will introduce changes facilitated by the Tour Architecture Council, a group chaired by world No. 3 Jessica Pegula. These changes aim to provide players with more scheduling flexibility while maintaining the competition's integrity and the high standard of tournaments.
A new Tournament Investment Fund will also be launched to provide financial backing to selected markets, promoting the aim of equal prize money and enhancing the overall health of the Tour.
Valerie Camillo, Chair of the WTA, highlighted the association's responsiveness to player feedback regarding calendar commitments. She emphasized that the achievement of equal prize money across all combined WTA 1000 tournaments is a groundbreaking development for women’s sports, reflecting over 50 years of advocacy for equality.
Pegula also noted the importance of the changes for players, citing the increasing flexibility in their schedules as a significant benefit.
For the 2027 season, the following key changes will be implemented:
- The number of WTA 500 tournaments that Top 50 players must play will decrease from six to four, leading to a total commitment of 14 WTA tournaments, plus the four Grand Slams.
- Players will have the option to substitute one WTA 1000 tournament result with a better performance from a WTA 500 or 250 event for their rankings.
These adjustments reflect a collaborative approach to shaping the Tour, incorporating player insights and approval from the WTA Board of Directors. The planned pilot year for these changes will help guide future decisions for 2028 and beyond.
The introduction of equal prize money and other enhancements illustrates the WTA's ongoing growth and its mission to strengthen women's tennis globally. The 2027 calendar promises to be a showcase of elite women's tennis, culminating in the WTA Finals hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina.
