After a challenging season at Syracuse following the departure of head coach Adrian Autry, Betsey entered the transfer portal for the second time in his collegiate career. He was previously at Cincinnati before transferring to Syracuse. BYU's interest piqued his attention, leading him to join the Cougars, alongside Collin Chandler, as their first offseason transfers.
In a recent interview following BYU's Marriott Madness pep rally on October 6, Betsey expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside point guard Rob Wright, whom he believes will be the best in the country. He emphasized the team's chemistry and the unselfish playing style that he thinks will enhance their performance.
Last season, Betsey was one of the ACC’s top three-point shooters, hitting 44% of his attempts in conference play, even as his Syracuse teammates collectively managed only 31% from beyond the arc. At BYU, he sees a different dynamic with teammates like Wright, Chandler, and Jaxon Kohler, which he believes will create ample opportunities for open shots.
Betsey remarked on the team’s array of shooting talent, saying, "We have a lot of shooters, a lot of guys shooting 40%, so the ball really pops when we play." He added that the team's unselfishness contributes to better shot opportunities and defensive teamwork, essential components for their success this season.
As the Cougars gear up for the upcoming basketball campaign, the potential for five players to pose a three-point threat simultaneously on the court reflects the offensive versatility BYU aims to exhibit this year.
