Currently, Djokovic has a slim chance of qualifying for the ATP Finals, which requires strong performances in both Basel and Paris as the season nears its end.

Former player Andy Roddick has praised Djokovic’s decision to accept the wildcard, suggesting that it could enhance his preparations for the 2027 Australian Open. Roddick emphasized the need for Djokovic to gain match practice during this period to improve his chances in Melbourne.

Roddick remarked, "If you don’t play from the US Open and then try to win a major right after a single match, that’s tough. It becomes even harder as you age, and I think it’s smart for Djokovic to get match play in advance of important tournaments."

He added, "Even if Djokovic takes a month off, he won’t lose his skills quickly. It’s beneficial to have late-season matches before heading to Australia."

Roddick also advocated for Djokovic to participate in additional events leading up to the Australian Open, noting that more matches would be advantageous at this stage of his career. He acknowledged that Djokovic's recent tournament entries suggest he is committed to being competitive in the upcoming Grand Slam.

In previous years, Djokovic faced challenges when entering the Australian Open without sufficient warm-up matches, notably in 2025, when he withdrew from the Adelaide International. Despite this, he managed to reach the final of the 2026 Australian Open, defeating players like Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
