With this win, Pitt improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in ACC play, while California fell to 2-3-3 (0-2-1 ACC). This match also represented a first in program history for Pitt, ending an 0-2 record against Cal in their all-time series.
Pitt took the lead in the 22nd minute when Cannon Scretchen's cross deflected off a Cal defender into the net. The Panthers extended their lead early in the second half, with Miguel Bertran assisting Albert Thorsen, who scored his first of the season in the 48th minute.
California responded in the 61st minute to narrow the score to 2-1. The Golden Bears attempted to equalize in the final 30 minutes but could not convert their efforts into goals.
Goalkeeper Jack Moxom made three saves to help maintain the lead, improving his season record to 5-2-1. Although Cal outshot Pitt 9-5 and led 4-1 in shots on goal, the Panthers managed to win despite the statistical disadvantage.
Vidovich's record with the program now stands at 100 wins, 77 losses, and 23 draws in his 11 seasons at Pitt.
