Currently, Tiafoe ranks sixth in the ATP Race to Turin with 3,380 points, but he faces competition from four players—Arthur Fils, Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Minaur, and Novak Djokovic—who are close behind. Djokovic, the Beijing champion, is in 10th place and trails Tiafoe by 540 points.
The top eight players in the Race qualify for the ATP Finals. Notably, reigning champion Jannik Sinner will not defend his title in Turin as he has opted to end his season to recover from a persistent right knee injury.
Tournament organizers expressed their support for Tiafoe's recovery in a statement on social media. Ugo Humbert, a two-time defending champion and one of seven French players to have won the Lyon title, will lead the tournament field. Other confirmed participants include Lorenzo Musetti, Tommy Paul, and Brandon Nakashima, while French tennis stars Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka are set to make their final appearances in Lyon next week.
