Bartunkova, who is currently ranked No. 34, started strong by breaking Sabalenka's serve and successfully saved five break points in a critical sixth game, maintaining a 4-2 lead. Although she missed three opportunities to secure a double break, she decisively won the first set 6-4 by holding her next two service games.

In the second set, Bartunkova broke Sabalenka again to take a 3-1 lead and did not face any break points throughout the set. She finished the match with another break in the ninth game, winning 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Statistically, the match showed Sabalenka struggled, failing to convert any of her five break points in the first set and encountering none in the second. Bartunkova converted three out of eight break points she faced. After the match, Sabalenka remarked on Bartunkova's talent and her effective serving, noting the difficult conditions of the match.

This victory marks Bartunkova's second appearance in the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event, having previously reached the round of 16 in Rome earlier this year. She expressed the significance of the win, citing the challenging weather conditions that fluctuated between cold and hot.

Additionally, this victory is Bartunkova’s second over a Top 10 player, following her win against Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open earlier this year, making her record against Top 10 players 2-5.

For Sabalenka, this match continues a troubling trend, as she has now lost six consecutive matches after dropping the first set. She has been unable to reach the semifinals in any of her five main-draw appearances at the China Open, despite previously reaching the quarterfinals three times.

Bartunkova, now with 22 wins this season, will next compete against Austria's Sinja Kraus, who advanced by defeating Dayana Yastremska.
