WTA Rankings Update: Fernandez Returns to Top 30; Birrell and Gibson Break into Top 50

Leylah Fernandez, who claimed her third title in the continent—after victories in Hong Kong (2023) and Osaka (2025)—secured her sixth career title and second at the WTA 500 level. Her Singapore performance included defeating Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals and overcoming Maja Chwalinska, the 2023 Roland Garros finalist, after losing the first set in the semifinals. Fernandez, prior to this event, had a season record of 17-22, having not reached any semifinals in 2026. She now holds a 22-21 record in WTA main draws and has risen in the rankings from No. 31 to No. 26.

Maja Chwalinska also achieved a significant ranking boost, moving from No. 25 to a career-high No. 21 after recording her first Top 20 win over Elise Mertens to reach the Singapore semifinals.

In Seoul, Kimberly Birrell captured her first WTA title after defeating compatriot Maya Joint in an all-Australian final, marking the first such event since 2017. This title follows Birrell's previous runner-up finishes in Osaka (2024) and Chennai (2025).

The Australian presence at these events was notable, with Talia Gibson, a quarterfinalist at Indian Wells, reaching her first final in Singapore. Taylah Preston also made headlines by upsetting top seed Jelena Ostapenko to reach the quarterfinals in Seoul, marking her first Top 50 victory since January. Both Birrell and Gibson made their Top 50 debuts this week, with Gibson rising 26 places to No. 37 and Birrell climbing 19 spots to No. 41.

Maya Joint re-entered the rankings after a challenging season, moving from No. 99 back to No. 75 after reaching the final in Seoul. Tatiana Prozorova, ranked No. 180, recorded a remarkable run to the semifinals in Singapore before withdrawing due to an injury. Her performance catapulted her 57 places to a new career high of No. 123. Alina Korneeva also reached a career high of No. 69 after her semifinal showing in Seoul, despite retiring due to injury during her match.

Three WTA 125 events were held concurrently, with Maria Timofeeva winning in Porto, making it her third WTA 125 title this year. Timofeeva ascended 20 places to No. 68, while Reese Brantmeier, her final opponent, climbed 93 spots to No. 293. Julia Grabher and Berfu Cengiz both secured titles in Tolentino and Ankara respectively, with Grabher rising to No. 99 and Cengiz to No. 225.

Other notable ranking movements included Joanna Garland leaping 25 places to No. 143, and Nao Hibino rising 33 spots to No. 157 after successful campaigns in Singapore. Ma Yexin and Ku Yeonwoo also made significant gains in the rankings.
