The Thundering Herd recently opened their Sun Belt Conference play with a draw against Louisiana Tech, a match in which they dominated by outshooting the Bulldogs 22-9 but settled for a 1-1 tie after a penalty kick was saved. Julia Migacz scored the Herd's only goal, marking her first of the season. She is among eight players who have found the net for Marshall this season. Wiktoria Mikrut, another Polish forward, leads the team with five goals, ranking her tied for fourth in the conference.
Marshall's Head Coach Rafa Simoes, now in his third season, previously served as an associate coach for the men's team. In 2025, Simoes led the Herd to their most successful season in a decade, achieving eight victories and securing four All-Conference selections.
Troy, under first-year Head Coach Jake Wyman, lost their Sun Belt opener against South Alabama, 2-0. The Trojans are led in scoring by fifth-year forward Alaina Uncapher, who has three goals, while teammates Madisyn Marchesi and Irene Torres each have scored twice.
Marshall has won the previous two encounters against Troy, with a 2-1 victory in 2023 and a 3-0 win last season.
