Currently ranked No. 56, Gea is expected to climb to at least No. 44, marking his debut in the top 50. He will next compete against either Poland's Hubert Hurkacz or Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No. 25 seed.
Gea has shown remarkable form, having recorded consecutive victories over seeded players in straight sets. He began his journey by defeating Portuguese Jaime Faria 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2, followed by a win against compatriot Ugo Humbert, the No. 30 seed, with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. In the third round, he emerged victorious over American No. 3 seed Ben Shelton, winning 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), marking a career-high win against the World No. 4. Mensik, currently ranked No. 15, now has a record of 4-1 against top 20 opponents.
The first set was tightly contested, with neither player able to break serve, leading to a tiebreak. Gea initially lost the first point of the tiebreak on his serve but dominated thereafter, winning six consecutive points, which included two mini-breaks against Mensik. He displayed composure similar to that shown in his previous tiebreak matches against Shelton.
The second set followed a similar tense pattern, and Gea faced pressure early on. He encountered a break point at 1-2 and required five game points to hold his serve in the next game. However, Mensik’s serve faltered, and he displayed signs of nerves at 2-2, mishitting a crucial smash at deuce. Gea capitalized on this error, breaking serve on his third chance with a remarkable passing shot.
Mensik, who reached the quarterfinals in Shanghai the previous year, had earlier defeated Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-3, and No. 21 seed Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. This defeat disrupted his 21-match winning streak on hard courts against players ranked outside the top 50 and ended his aim to become the youngest player to reach multiple quarterfinals at this event.
Gea’s journey this year has been impressive, rising from a ranking of No. 241 at the start of the season. He qualified for his Grand Slam main draw debut at the Australian Open, secured his first Challenger title in Noumea, and reached the finals in Zadar and Granby. He then achieved his first ATP title in Los Cabos, which enabled him to break into the top 100. Although he was eliminated in the final round of qualifying at the US Open, he entered the main draw as a lucky loser and made it to the fourth round, matching the best performance by a lucky loser at a Grand Slam. His recent record since July has been notable, standing at 13-2 following his victory over Mensik in Shanghai.
