Maja Chwalinska Advances to Semifinals After Victory Over Elise Mertens

This victory marked a significant milestone for Chwalinska; not only did it secure her first semifinal berth since her unexpected run to the Roland Garros final as a qualifier in June, but it was also her first win against a Top 20 player. During her Parisian journey, she recorded wins over players ranked between No. 21 and No. 24, including Mertens, Anna Kalinskaya, and Diana Shnaider.

Chwalinska's dominant performance against Mertens mirrored their previous clash at Roland Garros, where Chwalinska won decisively 6-4, 6-0. In Singapore, she maintained pressure on Mertens by mixing her shots effectively, which prevented the Belgian from getting into a rhythm. Mertens, who had a first-round bye and received a walkover in the second round, struggled throughout the match and made 40 unforced errors.

Despite starting the match aggressively, Mertens was unable to cope with Chwalinska's versatile game style. From a tied score of 2-2, Chwalinska went on a seven-game winning streak, taking control and leading 5-1 in the second set. Chwalinska excelled in her serve, winning 70% of her first serve points and 60% on her second serve, not facing a break point until the second-to-last game of the match.

When Mertens finally managed to break Chwalinska, the Polish player responded confidently, winning the match with a combination of drop shots and a flawless forehand pass.

"It's impossible to play great every single week, so it's just about consistency and work and you gotta be patient also," Chwalinska said during her on-court interview. "I'm happy that I stayed quite patient, I worked hard and it's paying off now. I had some tough weeks, so this one tastes pretty good, I must admit."

In the semifinals, Chwalinska will face either No. 1 seed Mirra Andreeva, in a rematch of the Roland Garros final, or No. 6 seed Leylah Fernandez for the first time.
