Maja Chwalinska captured her first WTA 1000 title at the 2026 Dongfeng · Voyah Wuhan Open, reaffirming her breakthrough performance at Roland Garros earlier this year. The 25-year-old, seeded No. 16, overcame a set and a break down, rallying to defeat World No. 170 Sonay Kartal with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 after 2 hours and 43 minutes.

In the final match, facing a pivotal moment at 4-all in the second set, Chwalinska saved three break points while serving for the win and then claimed the last five games. "It means a lot. It tastes very sweet, I must admit," she said after the match. "I feel like I still don't realize that I won. After the French Open, I had some tough moments, and it took a toll on me, but my hard work paid off today."
Chwalinska’s victory is significant as she becomes the fourth player since the WTA 1000 format's introduction in 2009 to secure her first title at this level. She joins Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, and Victoria Mboko in this achievement. Additionally, she is the fourth player this season to win her first WTA 1000 title, following Karolina Muchova, Marta Kostyuk, and Zheng Qinwen.
Chwalinska's win also marks her as the first left-handed player to win a WTA 1000 title since Petra Kvitova in 2023, and she is only the third Polish player to take a WTA 1000 crown, following Agnieszka Radwanska and Iga Swiatek. Notably, Chwalinska defeated Swiatek in the semifinals of the tournament.
To reach the final, Chwalinska faced a competitive draw, coming back from a set down against Marie Bouzkova in the second round, overcoming No. 10 seed Iva Jovic, and former World No. 3 Maria Sakkari. In a historic semifinal match, she secured a straight-sets victory to achieve the first all-Polish semifinal at a WTA event in the Open Era.
During the final, Chwalinska initially struggled, trailing after Kartal broke for a 2-0 lead in the second set. Despite early difficulties, she improved her performance, noting, "Sonay played amazing; I think she didn't let me play my best tennis." After winning the second set, she achieved the decisive break in the third, showcasing her renowned shot variety.
This victory elevates Chwalinska to a projected career-high No. 11 in the PIF WTA Rankings, climbing from No. 22. Kartal is also expected to rise dramatically, moving from No. 170 to No. 50 following her performance. Reflecting on her journey, Chwalinska expressed gratitude for her progress, stating her initial goal was to break into the Top 100 this year. "There's so much more to improve in my game and in myself, so that keeps me working," she added.
