The 2026 Wimbledon champion experienced a successful spring hardcourt season, including victories at the Sunshine Double, but has spent much of the summer sidelined. Despite this, he remains a contender for the ATP Finals in Turin in November, where he aims to defend his title as a two-time champion. Sinner currently ranks second in the points race, trailing Alexander Zverev by 750 points.
Sinner's withdrawal comes just ahead of a crucial period, as he is expected to return for the ATP 1000 Paris Masters in early November, another event he won last year.
Both Sinner and his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, have faced significant injury challenges in 2026, limiting their appearances on the tour. Alcaraz missed four months, including both the French Open and Wimbledon, while Sinner is now nearing three months away, having missed the US Open. Their injuries have raised concerns about their long-term health and performance.
Alcaraz has expressed his support for a revised schedule that allows for more breaks, indicating he will pursue this agenda in 2027, with or without ATP backing.
