Carlos Alcaraz, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, was defeated by unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs 7-5, 7-6(4) in the round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. This unexpected result also confirmed Alexander Zverev as the ATP's year-end world number one player.

Alcaraz, who had recently defended his title at the Japan Open and returned from a lengthy wrist injury layoff, struggled to find his rhythm during the two-hour and two-minute match. The second-seeded Spaniard had been sidelined for nearly five months before his recent comeback at the US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. Alcaraz's elimination adds him to a list of high-profile players, including 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and US Open runner-up Ben Shelton, who have also exited the tournament early.
Bergs demonstrated a strong all-court performance, excelling in the quick conditions and breaking Alcaraz's serve three times for what he described as the biggest victory of his career. The 27-year-old had previously lost to Alcaraz in the last 16 of the Japan Open but showed no intimidation this time. "This is something that has been very tough for me," Bergs said, reflecting on his win against a top player.
Alcaraz acknowledged his subpar performance, stating, "I didn’t play the way that I wanted to play. A lot of mistakes. I didn’t find a good position on the return." He credited Bergs for his strong serving and expressed disappointment in his own errors.
This upset victory for Bergs also secured the year-end world number one ranking for Zverev, making history as the first German and oldest first-time holder of the title. Zverev's rise to this position came after Jannik Sinner, who beat him in the Wimbledon final, has been sidelined since July due to a knee injury, missing several key tournaments.
"It’s been a fantastic season for me, winning in Paris and New York, and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," Zverev commented. He is set to face 19th seed Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan in the round of 16 in Shanghai.
