Previously, the record for most assists by a USA player in a World Cup debut was held by Alyssa Thomas, who had 9 assists against Belgium in 2022. Clark’s achievement also placed her among a select group of players, being one of eight to record over 10 assists in a Women’s World Cup game since the statistic began in 1994. Notably, she is the first player to achieve this feat without a single turnover.
Reflecting on her first game, Clark emphasized the importance of learning from her more experienced teammates, many of whom have won gold medals at the highest levels of competition. She mentioned, “Being surrounded by five people who have won gold medals before at the highest level, I try to follow their lead and take every bit of wisdom they try to give me.”
Clark's ability to find teammates in scoring positions was particularly effective against China’s defense, which she had prepared for prior to the game. "That’s one of my goals when I come to a game; facilitate and play fast," she stated, focusing on penetrating their zone defense.
She commenced her performance by distributing four assists within her first four minutes and concluded the game with 14 points, including three three-pointers, earning her recognition as the TCL Player of the Game with a total efficiency rating of 22.
