Since his last match at the 2025 Stockholm Open, where he was injured in the semifinal against Ugo Humbert, Rune has maintained a keen interest in the ATP Tour's top players. He expressed admiration for their performance, stating, "I think that, to this day, we haven’t seen players as consistent at the top of the rankings as Alcaraz, Sinner, and Zverev. I don’t see them as any more or less vulnerable than before my injury."

Looking ahead, Rune announced his plans to compete in various ATP tournaments, starting with the tournament in Tokyo. He said, "It’s a fantastic tournament and I’m looking forward to going back there." Following Tokyo, he aims to participate in events in Shanghai, Basel, Paris, and Stockholm, before evaluating his performance with his team.

Rune, who reached the quarter-finals as the third seed in the 2025 Japan Open, aims to defend significant ranking points. He previously defeated Hamad Medjedovic and Ethan Quinn before falling in straight sets to Jenson Brooksby at the Tokyo tournament. Given his strong showing in the Davis Cup, he is expected to rise in the ATP rankings and hopes to break back into the top 100 before the 2027 Australian Open. Achieving this would allow him to avoid qualifying for the Grand Slam, which could be crucial for his season start. After defeating a player of Dimitrov's caliber, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals earlier this year, Rune appears well-positioned to enhance his ranking.
