SHANGHAI (AP) — Ben Shelton, the U.S. Open runner-up, marked his 24th birthday by advancing to the third round of the Shanghai Masters. He defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the ATP 1000-level tournament on Friday. After the U.S. Open, Shelton participated in the Davis Cup for the United States but lost both of his singles matches and had previously withdrawn from the Laver Cup team event.
