Aminata Seck, a 26-year-old women’s basketball player from Senegal, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on August 7 at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport. She was preparing to travel to New York for a tournament with her Kentucky State University team.

According to her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, Seck is in the U.S. on a student visa. Reynolds suggested that Seck might have missed a visa deadline due to undergoing back surgery and also dealing with an ACL injury. Following her detention, Seck has been transferred to multiple facilities and is currently in a hospital.
ICE has not responded to inquiries regarding the reasons for Seck's detention or her conditions. She is listed in the Grayson County, Kentucky, Detention Center’s online inmate roster.
Democratic U.S. Representative Morgan McGarvey, who represents the Louisville area, is monitoring Seck’s case. He described her as a student-athlete who was arrested while traveling with her teammates and criticized the treatment she has received, referring to it as an extension of the previous administration's policies.
Last season, Seck was recognized as a key player, leading her team with an average of 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. She was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) All-Conference Third Team and received the SIAC Women’s Basketball Elite 16 award, which honors both athletic and academic excellence.
Kentucky State University declined to comment on the situation, citing the privacy of those involved.
