Ranked No. 39 in the world, Hurkacz had previously lost all eight encounters with Djokovic, including a narrow semifinal defeat at the 2021 Paris Masters 1000 and a close match in the 2025 Geneva final. This win marked him as the fourth player to beat Djokovic on hard courts, joining the ranks of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem, and Alexander Zverev. Hurkacz is now the 31st player to secure victories over all three.

The conditions favored Hurkacz, as Djokovic arrived following a five-match winning streak, capped by his 102nd tour-level title in Beijing earlier that week. However, he appeared fatigued against a determined Hurkacz, who had retired injured just five days prior in Beijing.

Hurkacz excelled on serve, holding all 10 of his service games, delivering 13 aces compared to Djokovic’s two, and winning 82 percent of his first-serve points. He successfully defended against two break points and converted two of five, breaking Djokovic once in each set. Hurkacz concluded the match with 32 winners against Djokovic’s 11, while both players recorded 19 unforced errors.

This victory marked Hurkacz's second win of the tournament after defeating Australian James Duckworth 6-3, 7-6 (4) in his opening match and extended his winning streak in the Rolex Shanghai Masters to eight matches. Conversely, Djokovic faced his earliest exit at the event, having reached at least the quarterfinals in his previous 11 appearances.

Djokovic’s loss complicates his path to the Nitto ATP Finals, as he currently sits ninth in the Live Race to Turin. He will require significant victories at the upcoming Rolex Paris Masters to improve his standing, with Alex de Minaur, Rafael Jodar, and Taylor Fritz closely trailing.

Next, Hurkacz will face either Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou or Italy’s No. 24 seed Lorenzo Musetti, who will compete later on Friday at Stadium Court.
