Andreeva, the reigning Roland Garros champion, received a first-round bye and launched her tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich, completing the match in 1 hour and 12 minutes. Fernandez followed suit with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Alycia Parks, which took 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The rivalry between Andreeva and Fernandez, which began in 2023, is currently tied at 2-2, but Fernandez leads their hard-court encounters 2-0. Andreeva’s first tour-level victory came against Fernandez at the 2023 Madrid Open, where she began a breakout run to the fourth round at just 16. Fernandez later defeated Andreeva in Hong Kong, where she captured one of her five career titles. The two players met again in 2026, with Andreeva winning in Madrid and Fernandez claiming victory in Toronto.
Despite Fernandez's edge in hard-court matchups, Andreeva appears to be in better form. In addition to her Grand Slam title in 2026, she has a season record of 45-14, with two additional titles this year. Only three players have won three or more titles in 2026: Andreeva, World No. 1 Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka.
Fernandez has struggled this season, holding a 19-22 record overall, with her win over Andreeva in Toronto being her only Top 10 victory so far. She has not reached a semifinal since the end of 2025.
In their latest matches, both players showcased strong performances against their opponents. Andreeva, returning from a narrow loss to Coco Gauff in the US Open quarterfinals, dominated serves, winning 72% of her first serves and 68% of Sasnovich's second serves. She impressed the crowd with her powerful backhands, securing key breaks at 4-1 in the first set.
After the match, Andreeva expressed her satisfaction with her performance, noting the challenge of facing Sasnovich. "I haven't played her in two years, so I didn't really know what to expect," she said.
Fernandez had previous struggles against Parks, but managed to find her rhythm with six outright winners while her opponent committed 41 unforced errors. Fernandez acknowledged the difficulty of facing Parks, highlighting her opponent's aggressive play.
