Head coach T.J. Otzelberger expressed that this setback is unfortunate for Toure, noting his significant role in the program and the team's eagerness to have him back for the season's second half. The focus, he emphasized, is currently on Toure’s health and recovery.
Last season, Toure started all 37 games, tying a school record for freshman starts. He averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, placing him among only 11 freshmen nationwide with those statistics. Toure also became the 26th freshman in the program's history to start the season opener and the fourth under Otzelberger. He accumulated 54 steals throughout the season, marking the fifth-highest total by a freshman in program history.
Toure had a standout performance against Creighton, scoring 20 points at the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas. In his NCAA Tournament debut, he recorded 25 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists against Tennessee State, making him the first freshman in NCAA Tournament history to achieve those numbers in a single game. The Cyclones boasted a 16-1 record in games where Toure scored in double figures, 21-2 when he had multiple assists, and 14-3 when he recorded multiple steals.
